Following this week’s delightful chatter around water coolers, it’s undoubtedly certain that most of us have been exposed to Tesla Motor’s most recent concept, Cybertruck.

In what looks like some sort of mash up of polygons blended with egregious futuristic design, the vehicle was revealed last week to about as much fanfare as one can expect from Elon and company.

The Lead In

Ahead of last week’s big reveal in Southern California, much of the hype surrounding the new truck was led by Elon himself via is Twitter profile. Claiming that the company spent no money on advertising ahead of the event, Elon and his team did what brilliant influencers do, they let the internet do the talking. And talk it did.

The Launch

With Tesla presenters dressed in all black attire, the launch of the futuristic Cybertruck was not without the fanfare one could expect from the launch of a vehicle said to have borrowed influence from Blade Runner, The Spy Who Loved Me and lauded as the Official Truck of Mars.

Aside from the usual Tesla fanboys screaming during breaks between sentences, the event was an impressive pyrotechnic display of lasers, lighting and of course, fire.

When Shit Happens, Roll with it

Sure, the event could have gone off without a hitch and still would have garnered a healthy amount of attention and reservations. What made it extra special was the unplanned (depending on which way you see it).

In what was every bit a spectacle as the truck itself was the failed demonstration of the strength of the supposedly bullet-proof windows equipped on the space-inspired machine. Following a blow to the door with a sledgehammer by lead designer Franz von Holzhausen which remarkably didn’t leave a scratch, the designer then lobbed a metal ball at the window above, shattering it upon impact.

Oh my fucking God is right.

The internet was officially alive. In addition to the space-themed mockery by way of the memes that were being produced at ludicrous-like speed, Elon levelled up again.

 

What followed were bold promises regarding the vehicles range and pricing which continued to send ripples across the world wide web. The futuristic truck seemingly penciled by a 7-year-old was indeed here to play with rival pickup models such as the F150, Ram and Sierra.

Standard equipment on the Cybertruck includes an adaptive air suspension, sleek interior and range of at least 250+ miles starting at just US$39,900 before any EV rebates. If you really want to play ball, higher-tiered models can get you 300+ or 500+ miles and the all-electric engine will literally transport you from 0-60mph in a mind-boggling 2.9 seconds.

To up the ante, a video was promptly released showing the Cybertruck’s 14,000lb torque rating comfortably dragging a Ford F150 up a hill in a literal game of tug-of-war with America’s most popular pickup truck.

The Results

Despite the mishaps, the proof is in the reality. Like most anything Tesla puts out, it grabs the attention of not only their current fanbase but of most of the world. Following the launch, consumers were able to reserve their Cybertruck order for a completely refundable deposit of $100 and as such, orders poured in.

Breaking the 200,000-order mark earlier this week, the campaign brought in over $2 million in deposits, yet the true value remains in the wreckage. This product launch lent itself perfectly to detractors, true fans and those simply sitting on the sidelines. Each was given enough ammunition needed to push their agenda (er opinion) on the vehicle forward.

Sure, it had all the panache we expected but it was the brief exposure of underlying vulnerability of it all that really caught our attention.
